During an install of a new release of BOINC (on Windows 7), I get a error message window that pops up with the following information: BOINC Installation Information Error 1321. The Installer has insufficient privileges to modify the file C:\Windows\boinc.scr. Retry Cancel Due to an increasing amount of malware that piggybacks on ".scr" files, our AntiVirus has been configured to disalllow access (of any type) to ".scr" files. Consequently, when attempting to upgrade the BOINC software itself, I get the above error, after which I click on Cancel, which is followed by "Are you sure you want to cancel?" and then this: InstallShield Wizard Completed blah, blah, blah Your system has not been modified. blah blah blah I do not run (and did not select the option to run) the BOINC screensaver. This restriction (which I cannot override locally) has not prevented me from installing other software that offers a screensaver (they just ignore the error, apparently), but BOINC apparently demands that its boinc.scr file be created/written. How can I get around this? The exclusion of "*.scr" files in my (corporate) anti-virus package cannot be circumvented. |

Well, you could do messy and use the administrative install option /a on the installer's executable, but then BOINC won't be installed, it's you who then decides which files to take and overwrite. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa367988%28v=vs.85%29.aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa367541%28v=vs.85%29.aspx for info on that. In the mean time, I have forwarded your plight to the developers. Perhaps that they can come up with a way to circumvent this. |
