Ahem... after posting this I saw the instructions on the main forum page to address specific problems on the boards for those projects... so will do so at climateprediction.net -- my apologies! (I'll leave this post intact but if it should be deleted just let me know)

After turning on my computer today my anti-virus program, Avast, popped up with a message declaring "hadam3p_afr_7.22_windows_intelx86.exe" is malware:

I haven't taken any action but a google search returned information about "hadam3p_pnw_um_7.22_windows_intelx86.exe," which is listed on a few sites as a threat (and is also in the ProgramData folder for climateprediction.net):

http://winwiki.org/wiki/article.php?kw=hadam3p_pnw_um_7.22_windows_intelx86.exe&

I found this page as well but, honestly, it's Greek to me...

Since the zip and exe files are dated 11/06/2014 I'm not sure why Avast detected it today, unless it was downloaded since the last scan...

Any suggestions? I'm assuming it is a false "positive" but just wanted to check Thanks!

We're not the Climateprediction.net forums, where they can best advise you about things about their applications: http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_index.php

But in general, it is best to exclude the BOINC Data directory and all files and sub-directories therein from being actively scanned by your anti-virus (and other anti-malware) programs. How to do so for Avast, can be seen here.

Just be wary of the fly-by-night projects, that provide little documentation or information about who they are and what they're doing on your computer.

Thanks for the responses! Sorry for posting here first -- I realized my mistake after posting (as mentioned in my first message) but wasn't sure if I should delete the post or if a moderator would do so or if it will sit here as testament to my cluelessness...

I posted on the climateprediction.net forums and received a similar response so informed Avast the "threat" wasn't one.

Thanks, and my apologies, again,

Robert
