While trying to install boinc on windows server 2012 R2 Essentials Build 9600 - trail version. the installer for 7.2.42 fails and returns an error box with "Failed to add to the 'bonic_admins' group (Administrator)." during "Validating user groups used by BOINC for secure sandboxes" My guess is that due to the extra layer on top of normal user interface, the coding does not allow the use of standard user interface to include new groups and users or due to inactive administrator user the code does not have the rights to add. Has anyone got a list of the users and groups need to install on windows. |

Server Essentials works as a domain controller. You can't create local users or groups in domain controllers (or something like that) which is why BOINC installer fails. The last release version of BOINC that doesn't create users or groups is 5.10.45. There has been some changes done to the BOINC installer in the latest alpha versions so that it doesn't create local users or groups in non-service installs. I don't know if those changes are complete yet. If you are interested in trying you can find the latest versions in BOINC download directory. Please understand that alpha versions may have bugs in them, in some cases very bad ones. |

You can't create local users or groups in domain controllers That makes a lot of sence. Will have a look at the alpha link - having been a cobol programmer I understand the risk and will look at it. May have to set up hypervisor and use the full processing power of the box. (AMD FX8320 (8 core), 16MB Ram, 12tb of HDD, 200mb ssd.) Thanks for the help. |
