Try going to Terminal, then the BOINC folder, then enter ./run_manager and see if you are missing anything (error messages).

i miss ./run_manager in my boinc folder!

i use latest boinc_client under FreeBSD

/usr/ports/net/boinc-client> pkg_info | grep boinc
boinc-client-7.0.25_1 Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing client

Looks like there may be a problem with the freebsd port - we have one user reporting problems uploading - have you tried checking with freebsd forums?
