I suggest some future version have the ability to limit the number of cores a single task can use at once. When Milkyway@home puts out tasks that use all 8 of my CPUs, they prevent other tasks from running. A couple of days ago, they release a number of such tasks at once and everything else was left out in the cold. I don't blame MW for wanting to get their work done, but those of use running multiple projects might like more flexibility. Thanks, Kirk |

Complain at Milkyway for not having an option in their project preferences with which you can choose not to run their N-Body application which does multi-threading. Multi-threading applications will use all cores on a CPU, when you tell BOINC to use one less, the work will stop until either all cores are available again, or the work times out after deadline. But really, these N-Body tasks don't take up all that long. On my i3 (2+2HT) they ran for all of 8 minutes. Your i5 or i7 should run them in less. |
