I have had a problem with a system doing an upgrade from 5.10.45 to 6.2.18 System is a P4 2.2GHz winxp-sp3 pro, protected install, only my acct controls BOINC. After what appeared to be a successful setup, I rebooted, but on restart and login the BOINC manager wont start and gives me a message that the BOINC service refuses to start. I tried to start it manually, but I received the following message: Error 14001: This application failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. I have tried to fix, uninstall & reinstall, uninstall & remove users & reinstall all without success. There is no group policy restriction, as I checked that too. I have done 14 other upgrades on similar systems, using these same options, without any major issues, so I'm stumped. Your help is appreciated. ![]() |

Error 14001: This application failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. Looking around it seems this error occurs if for some reason you had an install of VC++ 2005 on your system that went corrupt, or because the following files are missing from your BOINC directory: msvcm80.dll msvcp80.dll msvcr80.dll You can try to disable your anti virus/anti spyware programs before installing BOINC. Or just copy the above files from a system with a working BOINC 6 to the system with the problem. They do need to go in your BOINC directory, not the Data directory. If that doesn't help, please check in Event Viewer which files the service thinks is missing. |

I took a look all of your suggestions (thanks for the quick reply, BTW). This system is a refurb, but as far as I know, there has never been a VC++ install on this system. The files you noted were all present, but I copied them in from a working install anyway. This also did not help. There is no AV/AS program, and I tried w/o the firewall. No go. The Event viewer was no help either. The error message showed up, but there were no other error messages, or any additional information either. The exact error at startup: BOINC Manager: Daemon start failed : BOINC Manager is not able to start a BOINC client. Please launch the Control Panel-> Admin Tools->Services applet and start the BOINC service. Then I get the error as I mentioned in the first post. Is there a registry value I should check that might help? ![]() |

It sounds as if it's a permissions problem now. When you check on the BOINC service, properties, Log On, then who is the service assigned to? Is there a registry value I should check that might help? It sounds as if it's a permissions problem now. Answers to your questions above in red. As I said before, it seems strange because I've done more than a dozen upgrades in the same way, this is the first time I've had a major issue. Appreciate the help. ![]() |

LAUNCHPROGRAM Set this one to 1 Then reboot the computer and see what it does. (edit: just testing something) |

I'm out of clues so I asked the developer to come take a look. Haven't heard from him yet but I'm sure I will. |

Hello, Big issue on one of my PC migrating from 5.8.11 to 6.2.18 under XP Sp2. (the other PC worked fine). When I reboot after install, the Boincmanager app had disappeared. (the link from start menu goes to boinctray) I have to reinstall with all users option. no way I was forced to make a system restore but all my wu and the list of attached projects was lost. Was a big mess to reinstall boinc 5.8.11 and retrieve my lost data. Thanks for your attention emmdeb France Initiativ |

I was forced to make a system restore Uninstalling BOINC 6.2 will remigrate the data directory back to the BOINC directory. So all you should've done was uninstall 6.2.18 through Add/Remove Programs, reinstall an older version of BOINC and it would've been peachy. As for the 'original' problem: When I reboot after install, the Boincmanager app had disappeared. You couldn't navigate to your BOINC directory and start BOINC Manager from there? Not make a shortcut to it in your quick-launch bar? |

Today I upgraded from 5.8.11 to 6.2.18 under XP Sp2. Recycled (reboot) and checked. Only one CPU of a dual CPU AMD was running, and continued at the point where I shut down all, and upgraded this morning. Checked preferences, and NOTHING changed. After a few hours of going thru messages, uninstalled 6.2.18, and installed old version of 5.8.16 I found on the site. Rebooted. All working perfectly with no changes, both CPUs. Did nothing, and continued where the single one was, and began a new one. SOmething is wrong somewhere. Not going to upgrade again and loose hours of CPU and my time until system is stable. Seems it is still in a Beta state, which is OK, but is it really that full of bugs still? William Wilson Sao Paulo Brazil |

Checked preferences, and NOTHING changed. Something DID change: Enforced by version 5.10 and earlier: On multiprocessors, use at most X processors Enforced by version 6.1+: On multiprocessors, use at most X % of the processors So this second one is probably set to 50%, where it should be set to 100%. Also check that you don't use the local preferences which override the web site preferences. This wasn't in GUI form yet in 5.8, but is now available from BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Preferences. If you do not want to use them, click Clear. |

I'm out of clues so I asked the developer to come take a look. Hi, I'm wondering if there have been any new ideas for my install problem. I'd like to make this thing work, if at all possible, but if not, can I somehow go back to version 5.10.45? I'd really like to get this host crunching again. If I was to go back, how would I get the data files back? Can I just copy them back to the BOINC program directory? Thanks much for your assistance! ![]() |

The BOINC 6 uninstaller (through Add/Remove Programs->BOINC->Remove) should take care of migrating the separate data directory back into the BOINC directory. However, if it doesn't do that, use this FAQ in reverse (!) to get your data back. Then just install BOINC 5.10.45 into that directory. I haven't heard further from Rom as he went on vacation. He won't be back until after the BOINC Workshop. |

Thanks, the uninstall of 6 went uneventfully and according to expectations; the reinstall of 5.10.45 was successful, and the host is now up and running. If any new ideas come up, I would like to try 6.2 again. I'll keep subscribed to this thread, please keep posting! Thank you. ![]() |
