Had Boinc working on a Windows dual core laptop, as a service. Something went wrong, and I uninstalled and reinstalled latest version from website. Now all I get is "Not connected to a client" or when I attempt to attach to a project "Please use advanced / select computer..." I do so, and dropdown = localhost, and nothing happens. Icon is systray just says "Reconnecting to client", and nothing more happens. Pls adv, Boinc was working, but after uninstall/reinstall isn't. Don't understand why a fresh install is failing. |

1. Make sure you did the reboot at the end of installing 6.2 2. Make sure that both boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe run from the same directory. 3. If you are using a shortcut from the quick-launch-bar to your BOINC Manager, make sure it still points to the correct (new) BOINC directory. |

1. Yes, did the reboot after install. 2. Both .exe's are in the same directory. 3. I used to get MS's UAC "blocked startup programs", but Boinc is no longer listed here. When I went through the fresh (re)install process, I didn't see an explicit option to install as a service (which is what i want), that i remember seeing in previous installs on other computers. Also, the "slots" subdirectory in my Boinc directory is empty. For a dual core, thought there should be two sub-directories, slot_0 and slot_1, or something like that. |

BOINC 6.2 will split the directories, one for BOINC (defaulting to c:\program files\BOINC\) and one for the Data (defaulting to c:\programdata\BOINC Data\ on Vista). If you followed the default install, BOINC is installed in protected mode, aka a service. Only if you chose Advanced in the Installer and checked off the mark before Protected install is it not installed as a service. The Installer will have migrated all your data from the former directory to the default directory (if you didn't change it at least. If you pointed it to another directory, that's where you will find the data. The data directory **has** to be separate from the BOINC directory, no longer a sub-directory of the BOINC directory to make sure it works in Vista). Anyway, as ever: 1. check that both boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe are allowed through your firewall. 2. make sure Windows defender knows about BOINC. 3. check that boinc.exe is actually running. Open Task Manager to check that. 4. check that BOINC is allowed to start up automatically in services.msc |

reinstalling, yet again... Use Boinc Screensaver [NOT CHECKED] Protected Application Execution [CHECKED] Allow All Users On This Computer To Control Boinc [CHECKED] c:\program files\BOINC\ [CREATED / EXISTS] c:\programdata\BOINC Data\ [NOT CREATED / DOESN'T EXIST, though it was requested to create via the installer] will reboot now, and let you know more |

rebooted. apparently not starting as a service. still not in "blocked startup programs" as it used to be when it was working. going to control panel / admin tools / services shows that "status" is blank (i assume that means not started) startup type = automatic log on as = .\boinc_master when attempting to manually start the service, "Windows could not start the Boinc service on local computer. Error 183: Cannot create a file when that file already exists." OK button. I then go to Boinc, Advanced, Select Computer, Hostname (dropdown menu), select "localhost", and this automatically populates the password field. OK button. "Boinc manager is currently not connected to a Boinc client" |

Which Vista version is this? Is BOINC 32bit or 64bit? Is the computer a domain controller or does it get its account from a domain controller? |

vista 32 on an acer 4620z plain-vanilla-nothing-special laptop. not certain may have something to do with admin privliges under vista? seems unusual that the Boinc installer could not create the directory c:\programdata\BOINC Data\ and whatever else is going on between "localhost" versus ".\boinc_master" this really should have been a 2-3 minute install, lol... |

not certain may have something to do with admin privliges under vista? Are you installing it as a Windows Administrator? Do you have all permissions to write to the drive you are installing BOINC to? |

vista 32 on an acer 4620z plain-vanilla-nothing-special laptop. What happens if you change your data directory to: C:\programdata\BOINC Do you have UAC turned on? ----- Rom BOINC Development Team, U.C. Berkeley My Blog |

there is no directrory called "programdata" on either my c:\ or d:\ drive. the Boinc installer was left to defaults. it appears this directory and any additional subdirectories are not being created. "Yes", UAC is active. |

You could migrate by hand. See this FAQ for how to set up and move your existing data to a separate data directory. Then install BOINC 6.2 pointing to the normal BOINC and the now newly created BOINC Data directory. But that's really last resort. First off I think Rom will want you to try again. Uninstall BOINC and we'll restart with some logging. Please install BOINC in the following manner: - Put the BOINC installer in your C:\ root directory (for ease). - Open a command line window. - In it type C:\ and hit Enter. - Type cd\ and hit Enter. - Type boinc_6.2.14_windows_intelx86.exe /v"/l*vx c:\boincsetup.log" and hit Enter. (copy the command and paste it in your command line window) - Follow the installation of BOINC. - At the end of installation, navigate to your C:\ directory and find the boincsetup.log file that the installer made. - Email that to rwalton at ssl dot berkeley dot edu (add into it a link to this thread) This will show what the installer is doing on your system. (edited Rom's email address to be correct for future passers by) |

With thanks. Either Rom will communicate through me what to do next, or he'll post here again. We can only wait. |

Okay, so the installation log shows that the install was successful and that the data files were migrated to C:\ProgramData\BOINC. It also says that a reboot was not requested by setup. If you launch Windows Explorer and traverse to C:\ProgramData an you see the BOINC directory? C:\ProgramData may be hidden, you may need to type it in the address bar manually and then hit enter to see its contents. ----- Rom BOINC Development Team, U.C. Berkeley My Blog |

"Yes", C:\ProgramData was hidden. "Yes", there is a Boinc directory. Many files, and two subdirectories, "projects" and "slots". |

"Yes", C:\ProgramData was hidden. What happens if you launch boinc.exe from Windows Explorer? If boinc.exe continues to run, is BOINC Manager able to connect to it? ----- Rom BOINC Development Team, U.C. Berkeley My Blog |

Subsequent question from me, what happens if you set the BOINC service to start manually and then start BOINC Manager? In my case the service will start, what does it do on your system? |
