See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/ReleaseNotes#install-linux for the normal run down. If you would like to install BOINC as a daemon (service), look at http://www.spy-hill.net/help/boinc/unix.html. |

Usually sysadmins won't allow their customers to run binaries on their machine, for security reasons. BOINC itself consists of 2 binaries, the manager and the core client. On top of that, BOINC would want to d/l other binaries and run those too. They'll likely allow you to run scripts (programs written in interpreted languages) but usually they won't allow running binaries. They do allow running binaries. Just that if it's a shared host, and you use too much CPU time, you will get kicked pretty fast. |

They do allow running binaries. Just that if it's a shared host, and you use too much CPU time, you will get kicked pretty fast. Generally speaking, when it comes to running a BOINC client on a system, you should either be the owner of the system or have the owner's permission to run it. It would be prudent to first seek permission from the owner of the remote system and once you have that, you could request their assistance in getting the BOINC client set up. Alternatively you could install your own linux system and experiment with that. Start by locating a Linux User Group in your area. Get in contact with them. It's a reasonable certainty that they will be only to happy to welcome another member into their fold. |

I'm paying for webhosting, its not cheap, If i can run BOINC on the server then i have payed for the privilage. Again, if it's a shared host, you're using that server along with a hundred other users. You run BOINC, everybody else's website gets slow, you get kicked out. That simple. You're paying for the privilege of using that server, but the terms and conditions may say you can't use too much CPU. In fact, it's normal for hosting services to forbid running any process that stays running for long periods of time even if it doesn't use CPU. i cannot alter the OS. Chris Sutton meant you should install Linux on your own computer and experiment there, before doing it on the remote server. Due to my poor understanding of Linux, i still don't know how i can unpack the file "boinc_ubuntu_5.10.45_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh". I don't really know what kind of program i need to communicate with this server using command line prompts? It's a program in itself; it's self-extracting. {edit} Would someone like to unpack this file and email it to me?; "boinc_ubuntu_5.10.45_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh". Or can i get this file unpacked from the BOINC trac thing? If we unpack the file, what do we send you? One email with a hundred files? A .zip with all the files? Then you'd ask how to extract a zip from the command line, and we're back at step 1 :) You need to give it executable permissions (chmod u+x boinc_ubuntu_5.10.45_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh) and then run it (./boinc_ubuntu_5.10.45_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh). |

You won't get a command line on your browser, that's for sure. You need to connect via ssh, if your hosting even gives support for that. If they do, they should have instructions on how to do so. Maybe it would just screw things up on the server and then none of my websites would work. If you install it successfully, chances are you could make the server slow for a hundred more websites from other people, and get in trouble with the hosting service. |

I think i get the bigger picture here, its better not to slow down everybodys websites because of my addiction to BOINC ![]() I did try to get the "SSH Shell" thing to work but it proved to be too complicated for me ![]() Look thanks guys for the help with this, i appreciate it. ![]() John. P.S. Don't you just love these BOINC smileys! These need to be added to the BOINC source code along with my BB code mod for BOINC. Click one to see the full collection. ![]() |
