Yesterday i updated my boinc client from 8.2.8 to 8.2.9
- it took a LOT of time to update the client
- today i reboot my pc and is still "Reconnecting to the client..." (my only project running is Rosetta@Home)
- Despite the project calculation is not started, the boinc client is using 8% of my cpu and 15% of my M2 SSD
- I cannot close the client, 'cause all items that appear when you right-click (open, exit, suspend, etc) are grey

Updated normally on Win11 in VM here. Only WCG tasks have run on it so far but they do so without issue. My Linux boxes both have 8.3.0 compiled from source so not likely to have much in common. It sounds like something got corrupted during the update?

Maybe. At the end i resolved uninstalling this version and installing 8.2.4, that runs correctly...

BOINC 8.2.9 is running fine on my Windows 10 laptop for LHC docker tasks and WCG MCM1.
I only got a message when requesting a new LHC@home task: needs 42.21MB more disk space. although almost 80GB was free.

What is your OS?
If you have a lof of files inside your BOINC Data directory, the installation might take some time to enumerate those files and set correct privileges.

If you have a lof of files inside your BOINC Data directory, the installation might take some time to enumerate those files and set correct privileges.

I'm waiting to finish the Rosetta@home queue to try to re-update the client...

Guessing I don't have problems because I am not using docker, as my Windows installation is already within a VM.

It seems to be choking on the preferences override file.
But after a very long pause, it continues and starts processing work, requesting more etc.

What is in your global_prefs_override.xml file ?

Make a backup of the file and delete it to see how the client performs.

Mine is similar, and only 2kB in size.

Looking at the last section of log, with the older version it takes 13 seconds to read the file (which seems rather lengthy for a 2kB file).


Edit- i just exited BOINC (v8.0.2), and after 10 seconds restarted it on one of my systems. It took 2 seconds to read the file.
