Thread 'BOINC Runs Tasks When Should Be Suspended'

Reference prior thread: https://boinc.berkeley.edu//forum_thread.php?id=15356#114640 I'm using BOINC 8.2.8. I have the application configured to "Suspend when computer is in use" There isn't any schedule set. I have Activity -> "Suspend" Enabled I have Activity -> "Suspend GPU" Enabled I have right-clicked the BOINC Icon in the Task Manager and Enabled "Snooze" It's still crunching away. Interestingly some of the tasks indicated "Suspended - computer is in use" but the application just runs other tasks anyway. If I enable "Activity -> Suspend" then the reason for suspension changes to "Suspended - User Request" but again, the program just crunches other tasks instead. If I right click the tasks that are crunching and click the "Suspend" button on the left side, it does say "Task Suspended by user" but the progress bars keep updating to show the system is still crunching the data and my CPU utilization remains utilized the same as when I'm intentionally crunching projects. The only fix is to kill the program and reopen it. It then properly suspends tasks when the system is in use. I've tried switching from Local prefs to WCG prefs online and then back as well as forcing a config file read. Doesn't seem to resolve the issue. That's also not quite the issue I'm having. The application is not responding to my configuration to suspend processing while I am using the computer. e.g. Upon keyboard and/or mouse input. Sometimes it works as it should, sometimes it doesn't work at all, and sometimes it suspends some tasks and allows others to continue running. The only fix is to kill the process and reopen. Frequency of occurrence is random and I haven't figured out how to force the behavior to repeat. It does begin to occur every 1-2 days. Even right now it's currently processing 22 individual tasks with a status of "Running" while 24 other tasks have a status of "Suspended - computer is in use". The only time this triggers BOINC suspending since I upgraded to a Ryzen9 with 16 real cores is if I am using several cores to render video. It has 64 GB of memory, so the 80% rule doesn't really impact. The Einstein@Home GPU tasks are completed in 45 minutes. Rough estimate of 200-225 tasks/day assuming I'm not using it. So that's quite a bit already. BOINC gets my donated time when I'm able to give it. I didn't build the machine for the sole purpose of supporting BOINC research though it was a factor in selecting the CPU because it can process so many additional tasks. I prefer to not constantly run the equipment at 100% of capability. Especially since it doesn't reliably suspend while I'm using it and the system bogs down if it runs even at 80% while I'm using other demanding software. I like the idea of BOINC not running for several minutes after I've started interacting with the system. Even if I'm actively working on something the total % of CPU usage might dip below a 25% threshold and I don't want the software to constantly start/stop processing. My $0.02. ID: 117872 ·

Which is what your settings make it do. What you have done is select a group of options that should be used individually (either this one or this one or that one..), not all at the same time. "Use at most xxx% of CPU time" is for systems with cooling issues. Unfortunately, it results in massive thermal cycling which is not good for electronics. If a system has cooling issues, fix them. If that's too hard (or not possible- eg laptop), then make use of "Use at most xxx% of the CPUs" to limit the amount of heat produced (use at most xxx% of CPU time should be 100%, and the setting should be deprecated IMHO). If BOINC impacts other software when it's processing Tasks, then make use of "Suspend when computer is in use", but leave "Use at most xxx% of the CPUs" and "Use at most xxx% of CPU time" both at 100% If, as is the case here, that doesn't work as expected, then set "Use at most xxx% of the CPUs" to the value that doesn't impact on the other software, and disable "Suspend when computer is in use" as it is redundant. And disable "Suspend when non-BOINC CPU usage is above ---%" as it is also redundant. If BOINC isn't impacting on the other software when it's running, then there is no need to suspend it is there? and the system bogs down if it runs even at 80% while I'm using other demanding software. Then set it to "Use at most 75% of the CPUs" and leave "Use at most xxx% of CPU time" at 100% If you use the "Suspend when computer is in use" setting, then there is no need to use the "Use at most xxx% of the CPUs" at anything less than 100%, there is no need to use "Use at most xxx% of CPU time" at anything less than 100%, there is no need to use "Suspend when non-BOINC CPU usage is above ---%". If you use the "Use at most 75% of the CPUs" setting, then there is no need to use the "Use at most xxx% of CPU time" at anything less than 100%, there is no need to use "Suspend when computer is in use", there is no need to use "Suspend when non-BOINC CPU usage is above ---%". As for the actual suspend issue- your system may not have enough RAM and or swap space (or you settings don't give it enough). In order to suspend Tasks, you want to have "Leave non-GPU tasks in memory while suspended" enabled. Otherwise when you suspend it would have to checkpoint then and there. Some applications don't checkpoint well (if at all) and so all work running for them since the last checkpoint (if there was one) would be lost. Maybe a developer could let us know what happens in that case- does the Task stop without checkpointing, resuming from the last checkpoint (or starting from the beginning again if there isn't one)? Evening Grant, I'm not here to debate the merits of running the application at 100%. I've been running it this way on this system for 5 years and I expect it to go fine for another 5 years before I replace it. These are my preferences and while I appreciate your input I'd prefer to get the conversation back on its original topic. The software does not always observe my preferences for it to suspend computations while I am using the system. Those preferences include anytime the system detects user input via keyboard/mouse then a 4 minute period thereafter. Or, if non-BOINC useage is for some reason greater than 25% even when the system is idle. This issue also occurs while defined "Exclusive Applications" are also currently running. We had a long-standing bug in Linux where BOINC wouldn't follow preferences when the system was idle and in use. I don't know if that's been fixed in 8.2.8 or earlier. ID: 117880 ·
