I've finally decided to retire my Lenovo L540 and have bought a Lenovo V14G2 to replace it (I5-4100U to Ryzen 5 5500U) and all went well until I loaded Boinc. OS is Mint 22.2 Mate. I installed Boinc from the repository (7.24.1) and rebooted, tried to run Boinc manager and nothing happened so I ran Boincmgr from a terminal and all went well (Now running Boinc from the menu brings up Boinc Manager with two tasks, both Suspended, User Request but with the option to suspend them available). Trying to run Boinc-client failed. So, purge Boinc and try downloading the version from WCG. Followed all steps including allowing group access to the rpc_auth file and adding my user to the Boinc group but again it failed, in both cases with GUI RPC bind to port 31416 failed : 98 I have checked that the port is open using netstat -lntu and received the response :- tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:31416 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN Boinc Manager I then checked whether it was already in use with :- nmap localhost -p 31416 which shows it was already bound to Boinc Having run sudo systemctl enable boinc-client I would expect the Boinc Client to be running after a reboot, it is not. Running sudo systemctl enable boinc-client | sudo systemctl start boinc-client completes fine with no error messages but the client is still not running. Me confused! The output when I try to start Boinc in a terminal is :- sudo boinc --dir /var/lib/boinc-client 06-Dec-2025 13:48:17 [---] Starting BOINC client version 7.24.1 for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu 06-Dec-2025 13:48:17 [---] log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task 06-Dec-2025 13:48:17 [---] Libraries: libcurl/8.5.0 OpenSSL/3.0.13 zlib/1.3 brotli/1.1.0 zstd/1.5.5 libidn2/2.3.7 libpsl/0.21.2 (+libidn2/2.3.7) libssh/0.10.6/openssl/zlib nghttp2/1.59.0 librtmp/2.3 OpenLDAP/2.6.7 06-Dec-2025 13:48:17 [---] Data directory: /var/lib/boinc-client 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] No usable GPUs found 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] libc: version 2.39 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] Host name: edwin-Lenovo-V14-G2-ALC 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] Processor: 12 AuthenticAMD AMD Ryzen 5 5500U with Radeon Graphics [Family 23 Model 104 Stepping 1] 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt pdpe1gb rdtscp lm constant_tsc rep_good nopl xtopology nonstop_tsc cpuid extd_apicid aperfmperf rapl pni pclmulqdq monitor ssse3 fma cx16 sse4_1 sse4_2 movbe popcnt aes xsave avx f16c rdrand lahf_lm cmp_legacy svm extapic cr8_legacy abm sse4a misalignsse 3dnowprefetch osvw ibs skinit wdt tce topoext perfctr_core perfctr_nb bpext perfctr_llc mwaitx cpb cat_l3 cdp_l3 hw_pstate ssbd mba ibrs ibpb stibp vmmcall fsgsbase bmi1 avx2 smep bmi2 cqm rdt_a rdseed adx smap clflushopt clwb sha_ni xsaveopt xsavec xgetbv1 cqm_llc cqm_occup_llc cqm_mbm_total cqm_mbm_local clzero irperf xsaveerptr rdpru wbnoinvd cppc arat npt lbrv svm_lock nrip_save tsc_scale vmcb_clean flushbyasid decodeassists pausefilter pfthreshold avic v_vmsave_vmload vgif v_spec_ctrl umip rdpid overflow_recov succor smca 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] OS: Linux Linuxmint: Linux Mint 22.2 [6.14.0-36-generic|libc 2.39] 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] Memory: 9.56 GB physical, 2.00 GB virtual 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] Disk: 233.18 GB total, 209.59 GB free 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] Local time is UTC +0 hours 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] Config: GUI RPCs allowed from: 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [World Community Grid] General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 02-Nov-2025 16:24:29) 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [World Community Grid] Host location: none 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [World Community Grid] General prefs: using your defaults 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] Reading preferences override file 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] Preferences: 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] - When computer is in use 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] - 'In use' means mouse/keyboard input in last 1.00 minutes 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] - max CPUs used: 12 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] - Use at most 100% of the CPU time 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] - max memory usage: 8.60 GB 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] - When computer is not in use 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] - max CPUs used: 12 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] - Use at most 100% of the CPU time 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] - max memory usage: 9.08 GB 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] - Suspend if running on batteries 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] - Leave apps in memory if not running 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] - Store at least 0.10 days of work 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] - Store up to an additional 0.50 days of work 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] - max disk usage: 199.66 GB 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] - (to change preferences, visit a project web site or select Preferences in the Manager) 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] Setting up project and slot directories 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] Checking active tasks 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [climateprediction.net] URL https://climateprediction.net/; Computer ID 1562113; resource share 100 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [Rosetta@home] URL https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/; Computer ID 6345575; resource share 150 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [SiDock@home] URL https://www.sidock.si/sidock/; Computer ID 81598; resource share 60 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [World Community Grid] URL http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID 8909061; resource share 120 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] Setting up GUI RPC socket 06-Dec-2025 13:48:18 [---] Warning: GUI RPC password is empty. Try our vanilla package instead (also newer than yours): https://boinc.berkeley.edu/linux_install.php?action=submit&os_num=4&version_num=3&build=stable BOINC maintainer. For any insight, check my BOINC Development Blog. |

In reply to Vitalii Koshura's message of 6 Dec 2025: Try our vanilla package instead (also newer than yours): https://boinc.berkeley.edu/linux_install.php?action=submit&os_num=4&version_num=3&build=stable Thanks :-) However, I removed and purged again then loaded from the repository again and it worked straight off - me very confused. |
