I'm a little concerned it's almost weekend.

Yeah, it sure isn't a "brief" pause, at least not in the normal meaning of "brief". WCG has been down for over a day by now.

I decided to only do one task at a time instead of 3 at a time since the system wasn't up yet, and the stupid system "aborted not started in time" my tasks.... UG! I wish it would have let me continue working on them. now my system is idle.

Also idle. (My system, not myself!)

Been idle for 2 1/2 days already. I have read the operational status page given in their website link.
Interesting info & feel that they should allowed a week instead of 48 hours for what they are doing.
Just my opinion.

Overly optimistic timeline, as usual.

I don't disagree that it is a major job. My only quibble is with the description of the planned outage as "brief."

They do a reverse "Scotty". on star trek, Scotty would always say some long time to fix something, and then have it done in a short time.

WCG always says some short time to fix something, then it is much longer. A reverse Scotty. This is why I never want them to give us a time estimate, because they are SO BAD at that.

I agree completely! Best example that comes to mind was the 'short' transition from IBM to Krembil.

Strange behaviour from BOINC now when asking for work on WCG.

First it replies with the almost expected:

World Community Grid 2026-03-14 04:30:23 update requested by user
World Community Grid 2026-03-14 04:30:24 Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
World Community Grid 2026-03-14 04:30:24 Requesting new tasks for CPU
World Community Grid 2026-03-14 04:30:31 Scheduler request failed: HTTP service unavailable

The next attempt gives the following reply from BOINC:

World Community Grid 2026-03-14 04:33:41 update requested by user
World Community Grid 2026-03-14 04:33:43 Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
World Community Grid 2026-03-14 04:33:43 Requesting new tasks for CPU
World Community Grid 2026-03-14 04:33:50 Scheduler request failed: Couldn't resolve host name
2026-03-14 04:33:51 Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
2026-03-14 04:33:53 Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

It's soon Friday 23:00 hours in Toronto, and unless the team work during the night, and the weekend, I guess we will not see the return of WCG until some time next week, at the earliest.

Now BOINC is stuck at "Fetching scheduler list", and never manage to download it.
Basically, WCG is dead as a door-nail.

Well, the "master_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml" file is actually downloaded to BOINC, and contains the same text as on the WCG web pages.

New post on Jurisica Lab website:
March 16, 2026
Data transfer from legacy MariaDB to Postgres is ongoing for the largest partitioned table in the BOINC database, the result table. All other tables were transferred successfully to the postgres cluster.
We tested every component in production, and we expect to bring the system back online for users at the load balancer as soon as the data transfer and final integrity check between the legacy and new database are complete.

Maybe WCG will come back this week, with some luck. But the result table is huge, considering all the unpurged tasks. Nothing has been purged since before the migration back in August 29, 2025.

I was really hoping we would be back today. As Grumpy Swede said and I agree, the results table must be HUGE. So here is hoping we are up by Thursday and the outage is ONLY a week long.

Well, they'll be back, sooner or later. In the mean time, I'll do my taxes, which is extremely easy in this country. It's a 5 minutes operation.
